Base Running Tips

Sprinting Form

Run on your toes, pick up your knees, and drive hard with your arms. Make sure that your arm movement is pumping up and down by your sides and not across your body. Always run hard.

Running to First Base, Infield hit

Run through the bag like a sprinter hitting the finish line tape pushing down with the foot hitting the orange side of the bag, throwing back the arms, and pushing out the chest. Do not to lunge or jump at the bag;

Base Running, Outfield hit:

After hitting a ball to the outfield, begin a flat arc (see Figure). You should start about 6 feet out of the batter's box and hit the nearest left-hand corner of the base with the left foot. Do not slow down until after passing first base. On extra-base hits, continue the pattern of flat arcs to each base until running straight toward home plate. Watch the base coaches.

Remember:

Start with short steps
Run outside the base lines
Hit top of base
Run through the base
Find the ball
Dig and pump arms
Get a good spring off of the base
Look for the coach and the signs
Know how many outs there are
