Batting Tips


Start balanced on the balls of the feet
Keep head and eyes still throughout the swing
Keep the swing quick, short, compact, explosive
Stay relaxed, no tension
Keep front leg firm
Push off the rear foot
Throw knob of bat first
Snap wrist after hip motion and prior to meeting ball
Keep barrel of bat above the wrists
Contact ball out in front of plate
Aim for the top half of ball
Follow through
Be aggressive
Maintain focus and eye on ball
Drop bat and take quick initial steps to first

Trigger Drill.

Get into the proper stance with bat

Feet should be parallel with plate, slightly more than a hip width apart, toes pointed toward plate

Pencil grip on bat, the bat is held in the pads of the fingers between the "door knocking knuckles" and the base of the fingers. Hold the bat lightly with just enough squeeze to keep it under control (think of it as a raw egg that you don’t want to break) and align the "door knocking knuckles".

Weight evenly distributed to both feet, with center of balance at the belly button

Waist slightly bent, knees slightly flexed

Hands are held with the knob of the bat at the top of the strike zone and the bat about midway between rear shoulder and ear.

Elbows are held slightly away from the body and pointing down forming an inverted ‘V’

Keep head still, comfortably over the near shoulder with the chin slightly down, eye parallel with ground

Work on your "trigger" by lifting the front foot slightly and making the inverse 'C' with your hands

Concentrate on staying on the balls of your feet and keeping your balance centered on your belly button


Jump Drill

Get into the proper stance with a bat

Bounce up and down on the balls of your feet

Work on keeping your weight centered on your belly button and staying on the balls of your feet

Pay close attention to your hip alignment and make sure you don't push the hips forward


Squash the Bug Drill

Get into the proper stance with a bat

Concentrate on staying on the balls of the feet

Squish the bug by beginning the rotation on the back foot, heel up

Be sure to bring the hips, shoulders and hands around properly

Rotate the back hip at the ball with power

Belly button should be pointed toward pitcher

Throw the hands at the ball after hip and shoulder rotation is complete


Fist Drill

Get into the proper stance without a bat

Drop the hand closest to the pitcher to your side

Stay on the balls of your feet

Make a fist with the other hand and punch at an imaginary ball, bringing your hips and shoulders around

Work on hand acceleration and hand movement to the ball

Trigger Drill. (Stride-Replace)

Get into the proper stance with bat

Work on your "trigger" by lifting the front foot and striding and making the inverse 'C' with your hands

Concentrate on staying on the balls of your feet and keeping your balance centered on your belly button



Jump-Stride-Jump Drill

Get into the proper stance with bat

Work on keeping your weight centered on your belly button and staying on the balls of your feet

Pay close attention to your hip alignment and make sure you don't push the hips forward



Squash the Bug Drill 2

Get into the proper stance with the bat

Start with a proper stride and continue through the rotation part of the swing

Concentrate on staying on the balls of the feet

Begin the rotation on the back foot, heel up

Be sure to bring the hips, shoulders and hands around properly

Rotate the back hip at the ball with power

Check the alignment of your back foot, hips, shoulders and bat knob after rotation



Karate Chop Drill

Get into the proper stance without a bat

Assume the proper position which you would be in after rotation

Stay on the balls of your feet

Place your back hand across your abdomen

Put your front hand in the right position at the top of the strike zone, slightly away from your body and centered on the back shoulder, wrist cocked

Work on throwing the front hand down at the ball and extending the arm from the shoulder down all the way through wrist snap

Keep the shoulders relaxed and the front shoulder soft


Ax Chop Drill

Refer to the first 3 bullets under Karate Chop Drill, above

Place your front hand across your abdomen

Put your back hand in the right position a the top of the strike zone, slightly away from your body and centered on the back shoulder, wrist cocked

Work on throwing the back hand down at the ball and extending the arm with quickly and with power all the way through wrist snap


Extension Drill

Refer to the first 3 bullets under Karate Chop Drill, above, only this time with a bat

Work on completing the swing through follow-through

Concentrate on starting with the wrists cocked, bat speed through contact and snapping thewrists

Make sure your follow-through is balanced and ends at the front shoulder
